TracFone Transfer PIN: How to Move Your Number to a New Carrier
Leaving TracFone without losing your phone number comes down to one thing: get the transfer details first, and do not cancel anything until the move is done.
The short answer
- ▸Do not let your TracFone service lapse or cancel the line. An expired or cancelled number may not be transferable.
- ▸Your new carrier needs your TracFone number, a Number Transfer PIN, and your account details.
- ▸TracFone issues the Number Transfer PIN. Customers report getting it by texting NTP to 611611. Otherwise ask customer care at 1-800-867-7183.
- ▸Start the transfer with the new carrier. Your TracFone service ends on its own when the transfer completes.
What your new carrier will ask for
- ▸Your TracFone phone number.
- ▸Your Number Transfer PIN (TracFone's terms say you need the PIN "that we provide you" plus certain account information).
- ▸Your account number or the phone's serial number, plus your name and the billing ZIP code on the account.
How to get your TracFone Number Transfer PIN
- 1.Text NTP to 611611 from your TracFone. Customers on the r/TracFone forum report that the PIN arrives by text, sometimes after up to 45 minutes. Each request generates a new PIN.
- 2.If the text does not work, call 1-800-867-7183, say you need a "Number Transfer PIN to port out," and ask the agent for your account number at the same time.
- 3.Give the PIN to your new carrier promptly. Porting PINs usually expire within days.
If you turned on Line Lock in your TracFone account, it blocks transfer PIN requests. Turn it off first.
The right order to switch
- 1.Make sure your TracFone service is active, with an unexpired service end date.
- 2.If you are keeping the phone, check whether it is unlocked (see our unlock guide). If not, use a phone from the new carrier.
- 3.Get your Number Transfer PIN and account details.
- 4.Sign up with the new carrier and choose "transfer my number." Enter the details exactly.
- 5.Wait for the confirmation. Most transfers finish within hours. Keep the TracFone SIM in until the new SIM shows service.
- 6.Only then turn off Auto-Refill on your old TracFone account so you are not charged again.
If the transfer fails
Most failures come from a mismatch: a wrong PIN, an expired PIN, a different ZIP code, or an account number the new carrier did not accept. Ask the new carrier for the exact rejection reason, request a fresh PIN, and try again. If TracFone will not release your number, ask for a ticket number and file an FCC complaint. Number portability is your right under FCC rules.
